DELMARK
RECORDS
Independent label: A notable American label, founded
1953 by Robert G. Koester based in
Chicago. Frustrated by the lack of traditional Blues and Jazz available on
records in the early 1950s, Bob Koester decided to remedy the situation.
He started issuing records on his Delmark label in 1953, the first release being
an album by a local Trad Jazz band. A change of headquarters followed,
from St. Louis to Chicago, and the label started to prosper. As well as
recording original material Koester bought masters from other labels and
undertook a series of reissues of rare and classic oldies. Delmark helped
to fuel the Blues revival of the 1960s, bringing artists such as Junior Wells to
a new audience and winning the respect of Blues and Jazz fans everywhere.
The company's records were available in Britain from the early '60s
onwards. It issued 7" EPs, and it issued albums in the 1970s. Delmark
