DENVER
RECORDS

Irish in origin, British in manufacture and distribution.  Denver was founded in 1967 by London-based Irish expatriate Johnny McCauley; its first release was McCauley's own, 'Pretty Girl From Omagh' (DMC-1001; 1968).  The company seems to have specialised in sentimental records by Irish Showbands: McCauley is credited with inventing the term 'Country & Irish' to describe the genre.  Its biggest-selling artist was Big Tom, who, with the help of his band, the Mainliners, shifted considerable quantities of records; unfortunately, as the bulk of these sales were through specialist shops, which didn't give any figures to the people who compiled the Singles Charts, he didn't have any hits over here.  One novelty to appear on Denver was a tribute single dedicated to the Chelsea football club: 'Chel-Sea Of Blue', by Ron Harris, Players & Fans (DMC-1006).  The label appeared in two different colours, blue and black; it was still issuing singles in 1982, by which time the catalogue numbers had reached DMC-1025 and the label design had changed.  According to Music Master, Denver records were manufactured by Decca and distributed by Selecta up to DMC-1016 (5/76); after that point they were privately pressed and were distributed by Lugton and H. R. Taylor and Wea Ireland Ltd. Thank to Robert Lyons for the info.
