EMERALD

Emerald was formed in 1962 by Belfast promoter Mervyn Solomon.  It concentrated on releasing Irish material at first, but later expanded to include Scottish music; the occasional oddity appeared, such as an LP and a single by Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets.  Initially Emerald seems to have been a Dublin-based independent concern, but by 1966 it had linked up Vogue Records of London.  The few items which date from 1962-66 have all been pressed in the Irish Republic - were there any British pressings from that era?  In the early '70s Solomon sold the company to Decca, and it spent many years as part of the Decca group; the sleeve follows the same basic design as the other Decca family sleeves of the '70s.  Solomon retained the licensing rights to much of the product, as a result of which Emerald continues to put out reissues of its most popular records, operating from its headquarters in Templepatrick, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim.   The label scored its sole Chart hit in 1967, with Frankie McBride's, 'Five Little Fingers' (MD-1081), and it had a Pop / Country & Irish subsidiary, M and M.
