SONET
RECORDS
A Scandinavian label, founded in the mid-1950's. In
addition to Scandinavia, the label had a local branch in the UK. The label was
acquired by PolyGram in the early 1990's, and when Seagram bought PolyGram and
merged it with MCA family of labels to form Universal Music Group it
released more than two hundred and seventy singles in various Pop-flavoured
styles, Subsidiary label Stone also managed a couple of hits, but it
wasn't a great return for the number of records issued. There was
another tiny subsidiary, called Sawmills, which put out three singles recorded
in the studio of that name; and a much larger one, Kicking Mule which
concentrated on guitar music. The company continued on through the
'80s; it was sold to Polydor in 1991, and is still going as part of Universal
Music Sweden. Sonet used a SON-2000 numbering series for its
singles. Its original orange-and-red labels seem to have been
replaced temporarily in the late '70s by a dull, blue-coloured one; happily the
original design made a swift return. Distribution was by Pye; that
company appears to have experimented with injection-moulded labels in 1976, and
a few Sonet singles came out in that form. Some gaps in the following
discography are down to records being issued overseas only; several are the
result of the records being issued on the Stone or Sawmills labels Etc. Thanks
to Robert Lyons for the info.
