ATCO
RECORDS
Independent label: American; a subsidiary of Atlantic,
started up by Herb Abramson in 1957. After the departure of its
founder, in the late '50s, Atco was used as a repository for any kind of music
that didn't fit in with its parent company's Blues/Jazz/Soul
leanings. It followed Atlantic everywhere, becoming part of
Warner-Seven Arts, Kinney, WEA and lastly Time Warner. The label
survived until 1991, and was revived in 2006.
Atco was far bigger in the
States than it was over here. It made its first appearance as a label
proper in Britain in 1969 and disappeared in 1972, during which time it issued
around sixty singles. The American distinction between musical genres
wasn't observed in this country, and Rock and Soul artists alike could be found
on Atco. Numbering was initially in the 226-000s, but from early
1970 Atco and Atlantic singles shared a common 2091-000
series. Manufacture and distribution were by Polydor. The
label surfaced again in 1980 as part of the WEA group, with a new design
and catalogue numbers, this time in the K-10000s, were again shared with
Atlantic. Thanks to Robert Lyons for the info.
