BAF
RECORDS
Independent label: A Reggae
label. BAF-1, 'Swan Lake', by the Cats, which scraped into the Top 50
in 1969, is said in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles to be by a Dutch
group, but, while there was a group of that name from Holland, BAF's Cats were
from London and were put together by John Kpiaye, who was later to become a
prominent member of the British Reggae scene. The Cats were
responsible for the label's first five singles; there were at least ten released
altogether. BAF-1 to BAF-4 were issued in 1969; 6 to 8 came out in
1970, while 10, 'Bubble Gum', by Wave One (BAF-10) appeared in
1972. The company sleeve shown opens on the right-hand side, which
may explain why so many BAF singles are in less than mint condition nowadays -
too many accidental spills by people who thought that they were holding the
record the right way up. In 1971 the company released a Various
Artists album with a naked lady on the front cover, but even that didn't prove
popular enough to avert its closing down shortly afterwards. Thanks to Robert
Lyons for the info. Former Address 40 Church Street London N.W.6. Manufactured
