Founded in 1957 by Jeffrey Kruger, Ember was one of the first independent record-production and record-distribution companies in this country. It released a steady stream of singles, but tasted chart success only occasionally: with the Harry Simeone Chorale in 1960-62 (their version of 'Onward Christian Soldiers' entered the Top 50 on four separate occasions, albeit briefly); with Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde and John Barry, both in 1963, and with Glen Campbell (twice) in '69. A variety of label designs was used during these years: the red-and-gold one dates from the late 1950s, the grey one from1961; a red and yellow one was used in the mid '60s; and the light-blue one appeared in the late '60s. In the '70s the company settled on a new, black, design. Through all these changes of design the catalogue numbering remained constant: it seems to have started at EMBS-100 and to have gone on from there. Ember's main area of interest seems to have been in the LP market - particularly in the budget-priced division, a concept which Kruger developed and fostered. As far as the 70s are concerned, manufacture was by Orlake until 1971, after which Pye took over manufacture and distribution. The label design and catalogue numbering remained unaltered at the changeover, Some product with Ember numbers appeared on the Bareback label; presumably it was licensed from the American company of that name. Kruger started another label, Bulldog in the mid '70s; Bulldog survived into the '80s, but Ember appears to have hit the buffers in 1979. Thanks to Robert Lyons for the info.
