MORTONSOUND
RECORDS
Mortonsound was the label of the recording
studio of that name, from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Both the studio and
the label were run by G.L. Morton & Co., initially from premises in Oxford
Street and later from an address in Carliol Square; as well as making proper
records the company made acetates and installed public address systems.
Throughout the '60s and '70s it appears to have served as an outlet for
recordings made by Club / Cabaret / amateur acts, producing a number of records
in small pressings; some were recorded in the studio, others made as a
tape-to-disc service. Numbering was in an MTN-2000 (later 3000)
series. The EP shown has matrix numbers of MTN-2012 and MTN-2013, and, at
a guess, dates from the early 1960s. The label's main claim to fame seems to be
that it released the first single by Punk band Blitzkrieg Bop, 'Let's Go' b/w '9
Till 5' and 'Bugger Off' (MTN-3172 / 3173) in July 1977. The single
brought the band to the attention of Lightning Records; they re-recorded it for
that company, and the results were issued as GIL-504 in December of that same
year.
