RALPH TUCK PROMOTIONS LTD
RECORDS
Back in 1964, songs from a certain "Allan Smethurst" were to be heard on
local (East Anglia, Great Britain) radio and television programs. In December of
1964, four of the songs were released on a "Promotional" EP, by Ralph Tuck who
worked in farming on the management side, and also presented a regional BBC
radio program Tuck ordered a mere hundred copies for his first pressing; in four
months he sold nearly ten thousand! Briefly, the record outsold the Beatles in
East Anglia. The same four tracks were later released by EMI. The Singing
Postman’s career was brief and by 1970 Allan Smethurst was drinking heavily and
unable to play the guitar due to arthritis. He died in poverty in a
Salvation army hostel in Grimsby in December 2000. There are four EPs released
on Ralph Tuck Promotions as far as I can tell – red, green, yellow and finally
blue. Former Address: 1 Hillside Road, Reydon, Southworld,
Suffolk.
