UNITED ARTIST
RECORDS
Independent label: Record division of the United Artists film
company. United Artists Records Former Address: 37- 41 Mortimer
Street, London, W1. Was founded in 1958 as an outlet for UA's film
soundtracks. In the '60s the scope of the label broadened to include
Folk, Jazz, Pop and Rock, In 1969 UA acquired the Liberty and Blue Note
labels, in the '70s: When UA started issuing reggae records, on the
Ballistic label, in the late 70s, it appeared that every kind of music was
represented on its catalogue. Sadly, however, the good times were not
to last. In 1979 United Artists Records was bought by EMI; there were
a few more hits in the early '80s, The company used several different label
designs during the course of its lifetime. Early issues shared a
label and POP-000 catalogue numbers with HMV. In 1962 UA got its own
black-and-silver label and a UP-1000 numerical series; the UP-1000s lasted
until.1969, when a UP-35000 series came in. Numbers appear to have
jumped from 35899 to 36000, except for a couple of entries at 35951 and
35952. Around 1967 the black label was replaced by a
light-blue-and-silver design, which in turn was superseded by an orange-and-pink
one at some point in 1969. By the summer of 1971 the familiar
fawn-and-brown label had appeared, for Rhythm 'n' Blues singles, such as those
by Dr. Feelgood and the Flaming Groovies, its colours were changed to black and
silver. because of pressings being done for EMI by other firms, UA
singles came with injection-moulded labels. A series of EPs of past
hits, the 'Silver Spotlight Series' appeared from 1973-1976, with numbers in the
REM-400s, for 'Remember'. Some of these EPs had a special label
design, featuring a stylised American car. This label, which later
had the words 'The 'Silver Spotlight Series' included on it, was used for some
reissues into the 1980s, with standard UP-36000 catalogue numbers Some artists,
such as the Stranglers, the Buzzcocks and 999, were given their own individual
label designs. Manufacture was by EMI throughout the '70s, though the
RCA-like appearance of the promos from 1971 and 1973. EMI was also
responsible for the Distribution of United Artists records. By 1974
the promos had adopted the generic EMI form, with the small black 'A' and the
'DEMO RECORD NOT FOR SALE' wording. Two years later United Artists
had its own distinctive promo style, with a faint red 'A' again the
wording 'Demonstration Record Not For Sale' Promos from the '60s had
followed the standard EMI family designs: white with a big red 'A' until 1967,
green with a big white 'A' from 1968. Labels associated with United
Artists in the '70s included Avalanche, Cow Pie, Grateful Dead, Midnight Hour,
Pepper, and Rockfield. Thanks to Robert Lyons For the info.
